When we try to think of the best classic dive watch portrait, the Rolex reference 5513 instantly comes to mind for its purpose-built construction that combines simplistic looks and rugged feel. This very reference is the undesputed king of longevity when it comes to Submariner production that impressively spanned from 1962 to 1989.
If you think the 5513 reference is far from being scarce, you are right, but this variant is as rare as it gets for some tiny details that would make a world of differences to the keen eye of the discerning collector.
Despite being elusive, the present gilt dial is rich in details : The small underline signals the transition from Radium lume to a less radioactive Tritium alternative. But wait there’s more ! The gold printing is actually the result of a labour intensive process where the color of the underlying brass blank is visible in places where the black backdrop is not applied or simply put, a negative printed text that gives a metallic sheen against the glossy surface.
The meters first dial, the honest case and rivet bracelet are also wonderful details that make this very Submariner a showstopper that aged like a good château Latour !

MODEL / REFERENCE: Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 “Meters First” and “Swiss Only” radial gilt Dial. The 1084XXX serial range dates it to circa early 1964.
DIAL: The radial glossy dial has aged by developing a uniform spotting patina, otherwise it remains clean. The periphery shows some chipping marks namely near the 12 and 2 o’clock. Despite the sharp and complete gilt print, the “Meters first” text as well as the “Swiss Only” signature are exceptionally coveted and sought after.
The Tritium markers remain original and utterly gorgeous, acquiring a golden brown tone.
The lume-coated handset is original, in spectacular condition and has charmingly aged to match the markers’ colour.
CRYSTAL: Authentic Rolex “super dome” crystal in very good condition with light visible wear.
CASE: The 40mm Oyster case is in very good condition with well-defined bevels, intact lug holes and signs of wear consistent with the age of the watch.
The Aluminum, “Fat Font” bezel insert has superbly aged and shows no heavy signs of use. Please refer to the pictures. The Tritium pearl at 12 is intact.
CASEBACK: Signed Oyster case back that bears the reference number and III.63 stamps.
CROWN: Signed Rolex crown that screws-in and works as intended.
MOVEMENT: The in-house, self-winding Cal. 1530 movement is in full working condition.
BRACELET: Very good 7206 Rivet Oyster bracelet with signed clasp and 75 end-links.
