For sale Vintage Omega Seamaster F300 Hz reference 198.0018 AKA the Cone. A watch whose design and precision testify to Omega’s know-how.
The link between sailing and timekeeping dates back to the time when sailors relied on high-precision marine chronometers for navigation. The Seamaster remains the wristwatch of choice for many of the world’s great sailors. This watch is equipped with a so-called tuning fork movement, an invention of the engineer Max Hertzel who had previously worked for Bulova, also responsible for the Accutron 214 calibre, which became a turning point in the history of watchmaking. Max Hertzel was subsequently hired by Omega in 1973 to produce a tuning fork movement oscillating at 720 Hz, improving the initial performance of his invention. Please read the condition report carefully and refer to the high resolution pictures to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.
MODEL / REFERENCE: Omega Seamaster F300 Hz ref. 198.0011.
DIAL+HANDS: The watch offers a well-balanced matte black dial with a crisp gilt text and minute track imprint giving it a nice contrast. The dial has aged nicely to form a bubbling patina consistent with the age of the watch. Some minor discoloration marks can be seen at the one o’clock index towards the center of the dial, and another one near the bottom imprinted text. While being clear and simple, the dial features a day and date apertures, with clean discs at 3 o’clock. The day indication text is written in English.
The silver applied hour markers are in good condition with mild surface oxidation. Each one is set with intact Tritium squares that have turned into a brownish patina. For this dial configuration, the 6 and 9 o’clock indexes do not have Tritium inlays which is normal. The graceful paddle hands are luminous and are correct to the watch. They’re in mint condition and The Tritium has aged at the same rate as the hour lume squares, taking the same warm color. The omega trapezoid shield at 12 o’clock, along with the needle seconds hand add a hint of red color to beautifully contrast the dial, further adding to the charm of the watch.CRYSTAL: This timepiece comes with its correct scratch resistant sapphire crystal, in fine condition.
CASE: This Seamaster model owes its name to the avant-garde design for the time, which is immediately recognizable by its conical case. The case feels resolutely modern thanks to its generous 41 mm in diameter, crown excluded. It was made by one of the most accomplished casemakers of the 20th century: Huguenin Frères. The case’s geometry is unaltered overall, with strong, slightly curved lugs and superb vertical graining around the outside, suggesting being unpolished. Some surface marks can be seen, typical of normal wear in line with the age of this tool watch.
CASEBACK: The original six notches caseback is screwed down in place by a steel ring, which are both in fine vintage condition, displaying only some minimal wear and fine scratches throughout. At the center, we can observe a crisp Seamaster medallion in bas relief on a sandblasted background. The inner side is stamped with the right nomenclature for the period, with the case’s reference number, the “HF” hallmark as well as a small cool engraving indicating that the movement was licensed and patented by Bulova.
MOVEMENT: The 300Hz denomination reflects the frequency of the tuning fork and is considered as “Rolls Royce” of diapason calibres. This present Seamaster is driven by the Omega 1260 calibre, based on the ESA 9164 movement, which is further embellished with gilt finishing on the plates. This movement’s turning fork is electronically controlled and the calibre offers a wide range of features such as a quickset set date function and an electrical hack feature for precise time setting. The movement has been inspected recently and a new battery has been fitted. The Watch is excellent working order and running strong. By its very high frequency vibrations, the tuning fork thus emits a significant insect buzzing sound and allows the seconds hand to scroll continuously – without jerking.
CROWN: This timepiece comes with its correct grooved crown, embossed with a well-defined Omega logo at the center and operates flawlessly as intended.
BRACELET: This Seamaster comes complete with a brand new black leather strap that complements the black dial.
ACCESSORIES: watch roll. During the 1960s, Omega had the prestigious honor of producing more officially certified chronometer watches than all other Swiss watch manufacturers combined.
A decade later, along with the Battelle Institute of Geneva, Omega took a leap forward, past the tuning fork technology by creating a wearable wristwatch based on pure quartz technology.
From a technical point of view, this Seamaster has one of the best movements ever made, which gives them intrinsic and horological value, ensuring their future collectability.
