The present mid-century dress watch has the chance to blend the sophistication of a simple design with the mechanical mastery of the accurate, yet reliable Cal.88.

Aside from its timeless looks, the present example exhibits the top-notch engineering of the inhouse Cal. 88, which alongside its center seconds Cal. 89 sibling, were the mainstay of IWC’s offerings during the latter half of the 20th century. We therefore believe that this buttoned up IWC provides tremendous value for money-PERIOD! DIAL+ HANDS: The two-tone, silver dial shows a beautifully brushed surface that started to age lightly, all while maintaining a crisp imprint and no noticeable damage or imperfections. Other than its minimalist and refined looks, the minute track at the periphery is precisely drilled and set, via a technique known as “Perlé”. There is a faint oxidation on the applied gilded indexes, matching the baton hands.

CRYSTAL: The Plexiglas crystal is clean, without any major damage or scratches.

CASE: At 36.5 mm in diameter, the three-body stainless steel case makes a statement, while remaining very elegant, thanks to its sloped bezel and elongated, flared lugs that allow it to sit gracefully on the wrist for a comfortable wear. It has been probably polished before but remains strong and in charming condition overall, as it shows some fine scratches throughout, commensurate with its impressive age.

CASEBACK: The snap-on case back in stainless steel remains in lovely vintage condition, as it shows some fine scratches on top of its polished surface. The inner side is clean and decorated with a beautiful perlage motif. We can find the period correct nomenclature, including a crisply stamped hallmark of the IWC “Probus Scafusia” as well as the case’s serial number.

MOVEMENT: The esteemed Cal. 88 is, simply put, the small seconds version of Albert Pellaton’s Cal 89. Famed for its exceptional accuracy and longevity, this manually-wound movement, is decorated with wide Geneva stripes and a substantially beveled edge. The movement has been recently serviced, winds smoothly, runs with high amplitude and keeps very accurate time.

CROWN: The crown appears correct despite not bearing the brand’s signature logo. It winds the movement and sets the time perfectly.

BRACELET: Black leather strap with a crocodile print and unsigned stainless steel pin buckle. An original IWC buckle can be acquired upon request.
