The Vulcain Cricket Nautical is one of the most ingenious dive watches ever conceived. Introduced in 1961, it was built for divers whose lives depended on precise timing.
Developed alongside diving pioneers Hannes Keller, Max-Yves Brandily, and Arthur Droz, it combined a mechanical alarm, an integrated decompression calculator, and 300 meters of water resistance into one remarkably advanced instrument.
The rotating dial doubles as a decompression calculator, the alarm can be set independently thanks to its own dedicated barrel, and the whole experience of operating it feels less like winding a watch and more like preparing a tiny mechanical submarine for launch. There’s a learning curve… but that’s half the fun.
Perhaps that’s why one accompanied Hannes Keller on his record-breaking 250-meter dive in 1966, witnessed by Jacques Cousteau himself.
Not bad company for a wristwatch !
Please read the condition report carefully and refer to the high-resolution pictures to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.
MODEL / REFERENCE: Vulcain Cricket Nautical, reference S 2321 A. Dating from the 1960s and accompanied by its seldom seen, original papers. Inventory Code: ALP-06.
DIAL + HANDS: Original matte black rotating dial in excellent condition, featuring the iconic concentric decompression scale developed for calculating staged ascents after deep dives. The surface started to develop a subtle and uniform spotting patina. The printing remains crisp throughout, while the decompression aperture and outer minute track are perfectly preserved.
The applied luminous indexes have aged gracefully to a warm creamy hue and are matched by the original luminous dauphine hour hand. The minutes hand lost its luminous inlay.
The distinctive red-tipped alarm hand provides a welcome splash of color while ensuring excellent legibility.
CRYSTAL: Domed acrylic crystal in very good vintage condition, showing only light superficial scratches.
CASE: Large 42mm stainless-steel case, an imposing size for its era. The case remains exceptionally well preserved with sharp lugs and visible bevels. The surface displays light signs of honest wear commensurate with age and no noticeable dents or damage.
CASE BACK: Original triple stainless-steel case-back assembly that acts as a resonance chamber, it is in excellent condition. The engravings remain crisp and legible throughout. The inner components are correct for the reference and demonstrate Vulcain’s innovative acoustic engineering.
CROWNS + PUSHER: Both signed crowns are original and operate flawlessly. The upper pusher correctly engages the alarm-setting mechanism, while all alarm functions perform exactly as intended.
MOVEMENT: In-house manually wound Vulcain Calibre 120, featuring two independent barrels: One dedicated to timekeeping and the other exclusively to the approximately 20-second Cricket alarm.
The movement also incorporates Vulcain’s patented Exactomatic system, improving rate stability by optimizing balance amplitude.
Recently inspected by our watchmaker, the movement winds smoothly, keeps accurate time, and both the alarm and decompression functions operate correctly.
BRACELET: 22mm black Tropic rubber strap fitted with a rare, period-correct signed Vulcain stainless-steel pin buckle.
ACCESSORIES: Original warranty and instructions papers.
