The Universal Genève Polerouter is one of the most iconic mid-century designs, created in the 1950s by a young Gérald Genta as a celebration of pioneering intercontinental flights. With its elegant proportions and sharp case execution by Huguenin Frères, it quickly became a favorite among collectors. This particular example stands out with its beautifully aged black dial, now speckled with a cosmic patina reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The rare gilt printing adds a touch of warmth and contrast, elevating the design even further.
Please read the condition report carefully and refer to the high-resolution pictures to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.
MODEL / REFERENCE: Universal Geneve Polerouter, reference 20368/1. The partially faded serial number is 210888X. It falls within the correct serial range for this reference and dates the production year to circa 1960-1961. Inventory Number: 250708-1.
DIAL+HANDS: The original black dial has gracefully aged, displaying a uniform spotting patina as well as an attractive “spider web” pattern. The highly praised gilt print is still crisp and sharp and suggests that the dial has never been tampered with. The lume dots are all accounted for and have uniformly aged to acquire a warm caramel tone. The applied “U” logo, surrounding silver ring, and dauphine hands, add a welcome touch of contrast to the whole ensemble. The original hands aged nicely but lost their luminous material over time.
CRYSTAL: The Plexiglas crystal is in very good condition, showing no major marks or scratches. It still show the brand’s signature logo at the center.
CASE: With its gracious lyre lugs, the stainless-steel case is superbly wearable and boasts a diameter of 34mm. Despite being likely polished in the past, it manages to retain strong profiling lines. The surface displays some heavy wear marks and scratches consistent with the age and use of the watch.
CASE BACK: The stainless steel, screw-down case back has a distinctive tetra-decagonal shape and shows visible signs of wear. Just like the case, it appears to have been previously polished. The signature engraving at the center is visible, along with the serial and reference numbers. The inner side is clean, decorated and bears the correct stamps, including the case maker’s: Huguenin Frères.
CROWN: The small, domed crown bears the brand’s logo and appears to be correct. It operates perfectly as intended.
MOVEMENT: The in-house cal. 218-9 is a highly reliable movement that features 28 jewels and of course the signature micro rotor. It has been checked by our watchmaker; it runs well and keeps good time for a vintage timepiece.
BRACELET: Newly fitted textured leather strap, measuring 18mm in width and a generic stainless-steel pin buckle.
ACCESSORIES: Universal Geneve box The dial, crown, case back, and movement are signed. The watch is fully functional and ready to be worn.
WARRANTY: We guarantee the authenticity of the watch. We also provide 12 months guarantee for the correct function of this timepiece. All guarantees are subject to the General Terms and Conditions.
