We are proud to present this outstanding and iconic Calatrava, reference 96 from Patek Philippe. Reference 96 was among the first creations under the Stern family management which focused the direction of the company towards wristwatches over pocket watches. Manufactured from 1932 until 1973, the reference 96 ushered in a new era for what we know today as the “Calatrava”. Although it was not the first round wristwatch, it set the standard with its attention to proportion and dimension.
Given its outstanding production life, this particular reference came with a myriad of different dials and case materials. Patek Philippe made cases in stainless steel in less numbers than precious metals, henceforth they’re considered quite rare and sought after.

MODEL / REFERENCE: Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 96. The 610’XXX serial number dates it to 1935 and was sold on March 30th 1936 according the extract from the archives. DIAL+ HANDS: The silver dial is clean and almost immaculate. The signature and subsidiary seconds track are in superb condition. The guillochage of the subdial is concentric and very well preserved and the minute markers on the periphery of the dial are precisely drilled and all accounted for. This technique is called ‘Perlé’, performed under magnification by the highest skilled artisans. The applied silver hour markers are highly polished and contrast beautifully with the rest of the dial creating a mesmerizing effect under different angles of light. The silver leaf hands are non-luminous and correct to this reference and complement the whole ensemble. According to service document from 1988, the dial has been refreshed by Patek Philippe.
CRYSTAL: The Plexiglas crystal is clean and has been polished by the watchmaker
CASE: The elegant, three-body, stainless steel case is in very good condition. Measuring 30.7mm in diameter and 39mm lug to lug, its modest dimensions are instantly eclipsed with the elegantly simple design of its round case, flat bezel and downturned, drilled lugs. The case is still strong and its surface shows some fine scratches throughout, commensurate with age and careful wear.
CASEBACK: The present example comes with a snap-on case back in stainless steel. In overall good condition, it displays some hairline scratches, and two visible ones, commensurate with normal wear. The inner side is corrosion free, bearing the period correct nomenclature, including a crisply stamped hallmark of the infamous “Fabrique François Borgel”, as well as the case’s serial and reference numbers.
MOVEMENT: The outstanding Cal. 12 is an absolute prime example of Patek’s masterly skills. This manually wound movement with sub seconds features 18 Jewels and has been adjusted to 5 positions as well as heat, cold and Isochronism. The clean movement is decorated with Geneva stripes and has been checked by the watchmaker. It winds smoothly, runs with high amplitude and keeps good time.
CROWN: This watch comes with an unsigned stainless steel crown like it should. The crown operates flawlessly, from winding to time setting.
BRACELET: The watch has been paired with a genuine 16mm black leather strap, signed Kaufmann. Despite being unsigned, the steel buckle seem to be the original Patek Philipp buckle.
ACCESSORIES: Saffiano Leather Watch Roll. Purchase and service documents from 1988 are present. (Master Zurich, Patek Philippe) + Extract of the archives dating from August 2022. This reference 96 is fully original down to the understated dial, sleek case, handset and winding crown. With its subtle elegance, this is Patek’s testament of artistic originality at its very finest. As Patek Philippe describes it, “These inimitably elegant men’s watches are impervious to short-lived trends, recapturing the hearts of each new generation.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

We check all watches when listing the watch for sales, and again before shipping. In rare cases, shipping can cause the movement problems. Therfore, please check all functions of the watch upon receipt. Should you find any issues, please notifiy us by email without dealy.
