Minerva « Big Eyes » Waterproof Chronograph Ref. Just like Minerva -the goddess of a thousand works- the present chronograph, with its waterproof sturdy case and fabled Valjoux 72, is also worthy of the title as it clearly demonstrates the brand’s uncompromising pursuit of perfection on the inside and out. MODEL / REFERENCE: Minerva “Big Eyes” Waterproof Chronograph ref. VD 712 that dates to circa the 1960s.

DIAL+HANDS: The silver, sunburst dial manifests a perfect balance between a crisp, minimalist imprint and great legibility thanks to its “Big Eyes” referring to the oversized, engine-turned subdials. Usually these Minerva chronographs come with a luminous dial, however the present example comes with a rarer non-luminous configuration that gives this tool watch a charming, dressy allure, which is accentuated by the well-preserved, elongated arrow indexes that come in a much welcomed golden tone, just like the dauphine hands.

CRYSTAL: The acrylic crystal is in very good condition, showing no chips or major scratches.

CASE: With a sweet-spot diameter of 36mm, the stainless steel case boasts a good presence on the wrist, thanks to its long, twisted lugs. The case appears to be lightly polished, if not polished at all, as it retains a strong profile, with well-defined lines and even lugs. It however displays minor wear, commensurate with age and use that can be identified as some surface scratches throughout. Overall, it is in a lovely wearable vintage condition.

CASE BACK: The stainless steel, screw-down case back comes in lovely aesthetic condition, with some scratches throughout and opening marks around the six notches. The center displays a well-pronounced logo and reference number, surrounded by a legible engraved text at the periphery. The inner side is clean and decorated with a concentric pattern. It bears the Minerva signature, along with the case’s serial number.

CROWN + PUSHERS: This watch comes with an unsigned “mushroom” crown that seems likely original. It can be commonly seen on these Minerva chronographs. It winds the watch and sets the time flawlessly. The pump pushers appear to be original as well. They start, stop and reset the chronograph module perfectly.

MOVEMENT: The present Minerva houses the illustrious Valjoux 72 calibre to animate its functions. Renowned for its performance, precision, and robustness, this manually wound movement features a two-button, three-register, chronograph layout and a column wheel. It uses running small seconds at 9 o’clock, a central seconds hand and two recording subdials positioned respectively at 3 and 6 o’clock positions. This calibre is signed and has been checked. It keeps good time and the chronograph functions work as intended.
