Breitling Superocean MK II Chronograph Reference 2005

Introduced in the mid-1960s, the Breitling SuperOcean reference 2005 represents one of the boldest functional departures in vintage dive watch design. Conceived at a time of intense innovation, it abandoned conventional chronograph layouts in favor of a central elapsed-minute hand, purpose-built for underwater timing where minutes truly matter. Its oversized 42mm case, ingenious chronograph activity window, and modified Venus 188 movement reflect Breitling’s uncompromising, tool-first philosophy.  

Stripped of redundancy and rich in character, it stands out today as a cult classic, prized by collectors for its originality and unmistakable mid-century charm.

MODEL / REFERENCE: Breitling Superocean MK II Chronograph Reference 2005. A watch dating likely from the late 1960s. The serial number is: 1’155’620. Inventory Number: MS-37-02.  

DIAL + HANDS: Designed with legibility in mind, via a unique layout, the MK II dial is easily identifiable thanks to a running seconds subdial at 9 o’clock.  

• The matte black central portion shows honest signs of aging, along with neatly contrasting minute track on the periphery. The imprint remains crisp and complete throughout. 
• The mysterious small window above 6 o’clock is the chronograph activity status indicator: It is black when the chrono is off, shows a big luminous dot when it is running and a small luminous dot when it is frozen. 
• The blocky hour markers have unfortunately lost their luminous material, except for some traces at 12 o’clock.
• The bold white handset appears to be correct. The hour and minute hads retain a good visual balance, with aged lume inlays, while the signature seconds hand has lost its Tritium infill.  

CRYSTAL: Plexiglas crystal in good vintage condition, showing light surface scratches consistent with age and use, with no cracks or structural damage. 

CASE+BEZEL: Despite measuring a very generous 42mm in diameter, the stainless-steel case sports steep and short lugs that ensure a bold presence without feeling too tacky or uncomfortable.  

• The profiling lines remain strong and well defined. The surface displays various scuffs and scratches throughout, commensurate with age and use of this tool watch.  
• The bidirectional diving bezel is seemingly original. It has lost its luminous lume at 12 and proudly displays its battle scars and a noticeable dent at 7 o’clock.   

CASEBACK: Stainless-steel screw-down case back with an engraved medallion at the center, along with a surrounding text and the reference/serial numbers. The surface shows slightly faded but legible engravings, along with visible scratches and wear traces consistent with a vintage tool watch. The inner side is clean, signed, and bears a matching serial number. 

CROWN + PUSHERS: Despite being unsigned, the screw-down crown is original. It operates as intended, from winding and time setting. The pump pushers appear to be correct. They are responsive and engage the functions with crisp feedback. 

MOVEMENT: Modified Venus 188 chronograph movement with small running seconds, a central hand minutes counter, and an aperture above 6:00 that shows the timer function status: Off, running, or frozen. There is a US import stamp on the balance cock.  

The movement has been checked and is running accurately at the time of listing. All the functions operate as intended. 

BRACELET / STRAP: 22mm, handmade Italian black leather strap, and a generic pin buckle in stainless steel.  

ACCESSORIES: Saffiano leather watch roll.
