Wakmann Triple Date Chronograph Ref. 71.1309.70

Wakmann chronographs occupy a particularly interesting corner of vintage watchmaking, combining the technical know-how of some of Switzerland’s finest movement makers with designs that often flew under the radar compared with their better-known contemporaries. 

The present example is a particularly appealing example of that formula. Its 38mm stainless-steel case houses the highly regarded Valjoux 730, while the reverse-panda dial packs an impressive amount of information into a remarkably balanced layout: chronograph registers, pointer date, and day and month apertures.  

Add the beautifully aged Tritium details and racing-style strap, and you have a wonderfully characteristic golden-era chronograph with plenty of collector appeal.

MODEL / REFERENCE: Wakmann Triple Date Chronograph, reference 71.1309.70. Inventory Code: MAS-37-06. 

DIAL + HANDS: Original reverse-panda dial featuring a matt-black base with three, contrasting chronograph registers. The well-balanced layout incorporates a pointer date, along with day and month apertures positioned at 12 o’clock. 

The surface remains mainly clean, with the exception of a small blemish near the 9 of the bottom subdial. 

The applied indexes complement the dial, while the Tritium hour plots have developed a pleasing aged tone. The original luminous hands remain present and match the character of the dial. 

CRYSTAL: Plexiglas crystal in very good condition. The surface displays minor superficial scratches that can be easily removed if required.  

CASE: Stainless-steel case measuring approximately 38mm in diameter, offering a robust construction and a strong wrist presence.  

With strong profiling line and thick lugs, the surface seems to be very lightly polished, if not at all. There as some superficial scatches throughout commensurate with age, most notably on the bezel at 2 o’clock. Otherwise, no major dents or scratches can be observed. 

The protruding pusher buttons at 9 and 10 o’clock are intact.  

CASEBACK: Stainless-steel screw-down case back. The surface shows a crisp, ship medallion, along with very legible engravings on the periphery. It is in overall very good condition and presents several light scratches commensurate with age and careful handling. The inner side is clean and bears the name of the supplier: Charles Gigandet.   

CROWN + PUSHERS: Signed original crown accompanied by the correct pump-style chronograph pushers and calendar adjustment buttons. Each one of them operates perfectly. 

MOVEMENT: Manually wound Valjoux 730 chronograph movement that combines a column-wheel chronograph with a full triple-calendar display, driving the pointer date as well as the day and month indications. 

The beautifully gilded movement is signed and has been inspected by our watchmaker. The chronograph and calendar functions operate correctly. 

STRAP: Newly fitted 19mm black perforated leather strap, paired with a generic stainless-steel pin buckle. 

ACCESSORIES: Saffiano leather watch roll.
