Heuer Autavia Chronograph Reference 3646 unpolished We present this appealing and collectible Autavia 3646, considered to be one of the most important Heuer models and the first series of chronographs with the model’s name printed on the dial. The Autavia was destined for automotive and aviation fields, offering racers and pilots the legibility and rugged construction required for their pursuits. That answers why this very reference was worn by none other than the legendary motorsports champion: Mario Andretti. MODEL / REFERENCE: Heuer Autavia chronograph reference 3646. The watch was most likely bought in 1972 as indicated by the dated engraving on the case back.
DIAL+ HANDS: This third execution, reverse panda dial is in remarkable condition with no blemishes and a subtle patina. It features a dual register chronograph layout indicating constant running seconds at nine o’clock and a 45 minutes counter at 3’oclock. The white imprint is immaculately preserved, from the text all the way to the chapter ring. The applied markers are associated with Tritium lume plot that exhibits no degradation and has aged to a charming creamy patina. The polished steel hands are correct and preserve intact lume inlays. The central seconds hand is white and contrasts beautifully with the rest of the dial. The hour markers and handset have aged at the same rate and have the same color to them.
CRYSTAL: The Plexiglass crystal is in good vintage condition with only some minor hairline scratches throughout that can be polished off.
CASE: The case wears perfectly, measuring a nicely sized diameter of 39mm. Despite being likely polished, it retains a strong profile, manifested with sharp bevels and chamfers. The surface shows some dings and scratches, commensurate with age and wear. The case is crowned by a bidirectional rotating bezel with a black tachymeter insert. It shows signs of an eventful life and remains in lovely vintage condition.
CASEBACK: The 6 notches, screw down stainless steel case back is in excellent condition, retaining highly-legible engravings and displaying some scratches throughout, commensurate with careful wear. The inner side is clean and bears the period correct stamps.
MOVEMENT: This Autavia houses a workhorse Valjoux 92, a manually wound two-button, two-register, 45-minute chronograph timer. The bridge bears the names “Heuer and Leonidas SA”. It is clean and ticks strong. The movement winds, sets, and runs accurately within an accepted timekeeping range.
CROWN+PUSHERS: The signed crown is correct to the watch, winds and sets time easily. The pump pushers operate as intended: Starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph.
BRACELET: 19mm black leather strap and a signed Heuer pin buckle in stainless steel.
ACCESSORIES: Saffiano Leather Watch Roll.
